Was really happy to get down to Beanie Games in Stockton for another FNX (Friday Night X-Wing) as it had been a long week at work and I needed to relax.
Beanie Games is one of the best (if not the best) gaming stores I have ever been to and their facilities for X-Wing are stunning, 14 dedicated tables in the downstairs room, and these were almost filled tonight. There were 24 players for the regular fortnightly tournament.
Last time I went 1-2 and was really pleased with that considering I had only started playing in mid-October and had played about 6 games prior to the tournament.
I normally play rebels, loving the shield and lack of crits before they are gone, but tonight I thought I would play Echo and Oicunn, both loaded with lots of upgrades as it seemed a competitive list, manoeuvrability and a brick.
First round I was up against a YT-1300 and a YT-2400 but neither were optimised and the player was relatively new (I know I’ve not played that many but I think I had played more), I was able to force both of the ships into a corner and pick them off keeping Echo behind the Decimator and always having at least 5 green dice whilst touching the YT-1300 which meant it had no agility dice due to Intimidation on the Decimator. I won 100 to 0.
Second round I was up against three bare bone Firesprays, this was going to be a hard fight as they had 15 shields and 15 hull to chew through, again I forced Oicunn into their faces and this meant a disruption in the planned flight plans. I kept pecking shields and hull off of all three ships, concentrating on two looking for a win through the 12 point difference if nothing else. I lost Echo before getting rid of any of the Bounty Hunters, but was able to get rid of one on the same round as that loss and due to bad dials another was flown off the board. This meant we went to time with me winning 66 to 52.
Third round, still not sure what they ran exactly, but it was a B-Wing, Hawk and Bigg… My God! He chewed through the Decimator in two turns and in the next turn Echo was gone. I think I caused one damage to Biggs and the Hawk through ramming Oicunn into their faces but that was about it, short and (bitter)sweet. Lost 100 to 0 and was really impressed with the synergy of this list and how well it was played by Paul Severs (looking forward to losing to him again 😉 )
So overall though I was 10th, a great result for me and hopefully can only get better, just need more practice for the Store Championship and Regionals.
